How Vanta Is Helping Identify Log4j Vulnerabilities

December 21, 2021

You’ve probably heard by now about a recently discovered cybersecurity flaw that is being called “the most serious vulnerability in decades,” according to the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Apache Log4j is a Java library which runs across various platforms. The free, open source software creates a log to record activity used by developers to help track data or troubleshoot issues within their applications.

The free logging library is used by nearly a third of all web services in the world, including millions of websites and applications. Recently, a vulnerability was discovered that enables the attacker to run arbitrary code on an affected machine. These open source vulnerabilities are easy to exploit and hard to fix, making it a significant security threat for many organizations.

How is Vanta helping?

We at Vanta want to assure our customers that we’re taking every precaution to safeguard our users’ data.

Vanta was not affected by the Log4j zero day vulnerability (CVE-2021-44228) that was identified earlier this month. We know this for certain due to the fact that the Vanta Agent does not contain any Java in the stack but, instead, was written in C++ and Go. Vanta’s servers are also not written in Java.

Additionally, if you are using a server scanner or the Vanta Server Agent, and have packages that were tagged with this vulnerability, Vanta will alert you on the Vulnerabilities page to remediate this issue.

Vanta’s product enables our customers to detect vulnerabilities in their software and systems, including those affecting Log4j. As an additional safety measure, we’re proactively reaching out directly to customers for whom our product has discovered these specific vulnerabilities and providing guidance on how to remediate them. We will continue to serve our customers who may be alerted of vulnerabilities and help them best determine a strategy for internal security improvements.

If you are a customer and have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your Customer Success Manager or Vanta’s Support Team who will be able to assist you in identifying affected servers and provide more information on how Vanta is assisting with this critical vulnerability.

“Vanta's expert team helped analyze our compliance requirements and shared what was needed to complete a SAQ-D. Because of this, we accelerated our timelines, saved hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars in costs.”
