Greg, Technical Recruiter

Meet Greg! 👋

Greg is a Technical Recruiter based in New York. He joined Vanta in March 2021.

Tell us about your role at Vanta.

Vanta is opening up a New York office soon, and my job is to fill it up with software engineers!

What made you realize this was the right career field for you?

I was a math major for my first two years of university, but I then did a semester in London and fell in love with the humanities. When I graduated, my main goal was to see the world, and I ended up spending 11 years abroad.

In 2012 I moved back to the United States married, as a photographer and video editor with no real job prospects. One of my close friends worked in recruiting, and asked me if I’d be interested in an office job. The rest is history.

Having lived in many different cultures, I find it easy to make personal connections. As a recruiter, most of my day is spent talking to people about their careers and seeing if I can help them find a better situation. My job is really pleasant—everyone is nice and appreciative since in the end we’re working toward the same goal.

Why did you choose Vanta over other companies?

I wasn’t actively interviewing or deeply unhappy at my previous job, but I had worked with Matt, our head of engineering, and Gus, our New York site lead in the past, and they’re both people that I enjoy working with and trust. Vanta’s strong business was striking for me as well. The fact that we’ve grown so quickly is impressive, and it’s exciting for me as a recruiter—my job is to get people excited about working at Vanta, and who wouldn’t want to work at a company that is doing really well! Vanta’s culture is very important to me, too— everyone is so smart here, but also kind and empathetic. I have kids, and I like the fact that there isn’t pressure to work long hours.

Why are you excited about Vanta’s mission?

Vanta’s overarching goal of pushing the industry toward better security standards really resonates with me. Looking back on the Equifax data breach from a couple years ago, in the end they just got a slap on the wrist for exposing my most sensitive data, while now I’m stuck freezing and unfreezing my credit anytime I want to open up a new credit card! It’s one of many examples of the industry not doing enough to protect people—and something that we hope to change.

What’s your favorite book?

I try to read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez every couple of years. It’s a book that you have to read quickly as many of the characters have identical names, but since the writing is so beautiful and charming this has never been a problem.
