Introducing Custom Frameworks to the Vanta Platform

As organizations grow in size and complexity, so do their security and compliance needs. While Vanta's library of controls and supported frameworks are extensive, eventually, you may wish to use your internal expertise to build a framework Vanta doesn't support or create custom controls.

Today we are excited to introduce custom frameworks and enhancements to custom controls to help you improve your workflows, organize your security commitments, and manage your work at scale.

Work smarter, not harder

Custom frameworks

Now when you create frameworks unique to the needs of your growing business, you can manage and evidence them within Vanta. Use your custom frameworks to augment organizing your security and compliance commitments alongside Vanta's support for our ever-growing list of security and privacy frameworks

Once your frameworks are added, you can map custom or Vanta-managed controls and automated tests to requirements within your custom framework. This way, you can track progress and monitor the status of your program.

All your frameworks, custom and purchased, are managed from your Frameworks page. At a glance, see which frameworks are currently under audit, when you have an audit coming up, and pinpoint how much you have left to complete before achieving compliance.

Centralized controls view

The new Controls page provides a comprehensive view of your controls across frameworks giving your security and compliance teams an overview of the program they’re managing. We have also made it easier for you to truly customize within Vanta by adding the ability to bulk import custom controls.

"Our business is growing rapidly, and we need the flexibility to tailor our security program. Being able to include our custom controls within our Vanta instance has been an enormous time saver for us. We get a comprehensive view of our entire program and the ability to manage all our controls in one place"

  • Harlin Lipman, Information Security Manager, Chronosphere

As your organization matures, the list of frameworks and controls you'll need to comply with will likely expand, often duplicating controls across frameworks. In an effort to improve your experience and simplify your work, coming very soon, customers operating SOC 2 and ISO 27001 with Vanta-supported controls will receive an update to consolidate redundant controls.

Why implement custom frameworks or custom controls?

  • Your organization wants to use a framework that Vanta doesn't currently support.
  • Your organization utilizes multiple frameworks, and you control over deduplicating your overall control set across all frameworks.
  • You want to create a custom framework to organize and track a custom set of controls.
  • Your organization is expanding into additional countries or regulated industries, and you need more flexibility to customize your controls and frameworks.
  • Your organization already has a custom control set you manage in a spreadsheet or other system, and you want the benefit of gaining a comprehensive and more real-time view of your entire security program in one platform.

Upgrade your security program

Vanta's custom frameworks and controls offer your organization the flexibility to create and operate a personalized security program in one solution.

PCI Compliance Selection Guide

Determine Your PCI Compliance Level

If your organization processes, stores, or transmits cardholder data, you must comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), a global mandate created by major credit card companies. Compliance is mandatory for any business that accepts credit card payments.

When establishing strategies for implementing and maintaining PCI compliance, your organization needs to understand what constitutes a Merchant or Service Provider, and whether a Self Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) or Report on Compliance (ROC) is most applicable to your business.

Answer a few short questions and we’ll help identify your compliance level.

Identify your PCI SAQ or ROC level

The PCI Security Standards Council has established the below criteria for Merchant and Service Provider validation. Use these descriptions to help determine the SAQ or ROC that best applies to your organization.

Good news! Vanta supports all of the following compliance levels:

SAQ A

A SAQ A is required for Merchants that do not require the physical presence of a credit card (like an eCommerce, mail, or telephone purchase). This means that the Merchant’s business has fully outsourced all cardholder data processing to PCI DSS compliant third party Service Providers, with no electronic storage, processing, or transmission of any cardholder data on the Merchant’s system or premises.

Get PCI DSS certified

SAQ A-EP

A SAQ A-EP is similar to a SAQ A, but is a requirement for Merchants that don't receive cardholder data, but control how cardholder data is redirected to a PCI DSS validated third-party payment processor.

SAQ D
for service providers

A SAQ D includes over 200 requirements and covers the entirety of PCI DSS compliance. If you are a Service Provider, a SAQ D is the only SAQ you’re eligible to complete.

ROC
Level 1 for service providers

A Report on Compliance (ROC) is an annual assessment that determines your organization’s ability to protect cardholder data. If you’re a Merchant that processes over six million transactions annually or a Service Provider that processes more than 300,000 transactions annually, your organization is responsible for both a ROC and an Attestation of Compliance (AOC).
